According to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 - for the Amelioration of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field - ambulances are granting a special status. Therefore apply armored ambulance MTW not as armored fighting vehicles or armored personnel carrier look-alikes.
The most widely used transport vehicle is the M113 from the United States , which has already been put into service in the 1950s, and in almost all NATO armies and finds almost all current and former Confederate armies of the USA still. This vehicle is a good example of the versatility of transport tanks:
- Personnel Carriers (MTW) (English: Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) )
- FüFu : Leadership and vehicle radio (for command posts)
- Mortar carrier for the 120-mm mortar
- AB "Optronic" Forward Observer
- San MTW: MTW with berths for the transportation of casualties
- Vehicle carrying the M 113 "ABRA" A rtillerie- B eobachtungs- Ra is
- Lance: launching and transport vehicle for the medium-range missile "Lance"
- Chassis for the mortars "Scorpio"
An example of a Radtransportpanzer is the " fox "of the German army, a vehicle that is in almost all branches of service use. This vehicle is available in several versions:
- TPz 1 fox : the base variant as personnel carrier, ambulance, FüFu
- BY: Träger des P anzer- A ufklärungs- Ra dars
- NBC reconnaissance vehicle: equipped with sensors to detect NBC threats
- "Bumblebee": EW tanks to disrupt enemy communications connections
Successor in many areas of both the M 113 and the TPz Fuchs is the GTK Boxer ( G epanzertes T ransport- K raftfahrzeug "Boxer") to be located currently in the prototype stage.
Yet, this lighter armored transport vehicle such as German are ATF Dingo based on a truck chassis. These are protected against attack with infantry small arms and anti-personnel mines and booby traps, but not against anti-tank weapons, and only limited hand against anti-tank mines.
